How Anxiety Serves You

There is a chemical, a hormone, called Noradrenalin that your brain produces when you are about to go into a downward spiral. It’s actually your body’s way of saying, “Hey- you need to back up NOW and get out of this dark alley!”

Noradrenalin is only supposed to last 1-5 minutes, but we tend to think that we need to find another worry to feel responsible for, look for more problems so that we can feel prepared and look for another disaster so that we’ll be informed.


We are supposed to take this early warning signal to find a better feeling thought- something to lift us out of the downward spiral before we hit panic.

Find anything good. Leaves on a tree, your grandchild’s or child’s smile or hug, the clouds in the sky, the nice car you have and are thankful for, these are all examples of something that you can shift your thoughts toward.

Dr. Bill Pettit says that when anxiety shows up, it is an invitation to “…leave your thinking alone.” This means to not make decisions from here or give it much credence. You are in an altered state of mind, obviously, if you feel anxious.

Remember this- if we have the courage to leave our thinking alone instead of jumping in and trying to solve problems from this place, we will be able to access a better feeling thought, and then another and then another. This is the upward spiral and what we are all looking for.

Anxiety is just an early warning sign like a sniffle indicates a cold if we don’t take care right away. When we get a sniffle, we don’t berate it, we see it as a clue that we should rest, drink water and tea and maybe some Vitamin C. Same with anxiety.
